Similar to past simple, with a specific time started and ended but this tense is used in the middle between the starting and finishing time specifically.

 

I was eating an apple when it rained.

I was eating an apple at 7 last night.

 

Opposite

 

I was not eating an apple when it rained

I was not eating an apple at 7 last night.

 

This tense can also be used when other things happened at the same time in the past during your past action.

 

I was eating an apple when you were eating a cake.

 

Opposite

 

I was not eating an apple when you were eating a cake.

 

Or when something happen regularly in the past.

 

Peter was always protecting me.

I was always eating an apple while studying.

 

Opposite:

 

Peter was not always protecting me.

I was not always eating an apple while studying.

Past Continuous!

I was cooking when she walked into the kitchen.
