This tense is used to talk about something that happened before another thing/time in the past, a specific time can be used but not compulsory.
I had eaten apple pies before yesterday.
I had been making apple pies for years until I stopped last year.
Opposite
I had not eaten any apple pies before yesterday.
I had not been making apple pies for years since I stopped.
Past Perfect!
I had not played the drums since I quit the band.
